Delta County Memorial Hospital Foundation provides upgraded phototherapy light for the Labor and Delivery unit of Delta County Memorial Hospital. Phototherapy can be used to treat newborn jaundice by lowering the bilirubin levels in a baby's blood.
"An infant is placed under these lights to reduce their bilirubin levels also known as jaundice." Loretta Taylor, a registered nurse in Storks Landing explains, "They just need some help processing the extra bilirubin. As a little baby, they're not developed enough to break it down by themselves."
Jaundice occurs when there is a build-up of a naturally occurring substance in the blood called bilirubin. Bilirubin is produced by the normal breakdown of red blood cells. There are normally low levels of bilirubin in the blood. As it begins to build up, the bilirubin deposits on the fatty tissue under the skin causing the baby's skin and whites of the baby's eyes to appear yellow.
Lorie Spencer, RN says the new bili-light has been, "so much easier to work with and maneuver."
